We also tested it. But the fine print in the P90X guide explains this, essentially stating, that if you feel better extending your blocks to five or six weeks, go for it. These periods are fleeting. Two bad workouts, consider that your peak may be over.
Then you know for sure. This changes your recovery strategy. Instead of easing off, the workload switches to core, balance, and mobility training, which for some people is harder than the main blocks of training. The BODathon requires overall performance, and that requires full body recovery. Because most people think Recovery Week is about rest, they often choose not to follow through with it as faithfully as they should.
They skip workouts and miss yoga sessions. But, because the workouts have shifted, and they have allowed themselves to have all that down time, they come back into the program after the third week feeling weak.

Is P90X Recovery Week necessary? Hopefully, you see how necessary it is. There is no denying it—the workouts are really hard. But, no pain, no gain, right? This keeps your muscles working while also allowing them to recover for the next workout. The training then switches up again after the recovery week to confuse the muscles even more! This continues for three weeks and then you hit another recovery week, where the workout will be switched up again for the final four week block.

P90X has even developed delicious recipes to support your training schedule. The 90 Day Challenge at Phys — Ed is done with a group of 2 — 8 people of similar fitness levels. The 90 days consists of workouts with your Personal Trainer and your group, a commitment of 2 days per week with your challenge group, as well as workouts you will do on your own.
And since the folks at Beachbody have put it into a complete plan for us, my advice is to follow their plan! Take the recovery week! Alternate lift and cardio days to rest the muscles. Well, I trusted in what the smart folks at Beachbody designed, so I took the recovery week, and I learned a couple things: 1 — The recovery week is actually a tough week!
